Devin Chicas

Devin Chicas is a Los Angeles native who embodies the spirit of being the "jack of all trades" and received her BFA at the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore. During her time as an undergrad, she worked on collaborative stop-motion projects and spent much of her time studying traditional methods of printmaking. She pursued her MFA at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Her work incorporates various forms of art making that include but are not limited to sculpture, photography, printmaking, animation, graphic design and painting.

Most recently, Devin has been working on bodies of work that deal with perceptions of gender, fertility/infertility, deformities, abnormalities and sex with a focus on confronting the Latin American Male gaze. Through the use of various mediums she plays with scale, material and placement to make the viewer challenge their ideas of femininity and domesticity.

Her interest in art and culture have lead her to travel to many places abroad. During her visits to France, the Netherlands, Germany and Belgium she became very interested in the contrast between European art history and Latin American art history. In particular, she noticed an under-representation in museums and artist retrospectives. Being of Latin American parentage herself, her work tries to bridge the gap between traditional art making forms and folkloric arts that historically have been associated with “primitive” civilizations. With these ideas in mind, she tries to create works in which the hand of the artist is present and perfection is unimportant.
